PSA: Your Core is Not Just for Summer
The core truth: why looking after your abs is a year-round must-do for women over 40
There’s something about the shift into the winter months that makes a lot of women quietly slide their core work off the to-do list. The baggy jumpers come out, the beach photos get archived… and the assumption is: "I’ll come back to that in spring”.
But if you’re a woman in midlife?
Your core is not a seasonal accessory. I would love for you to think of it, quite literally, as the engine room of your body. It’s there, putting in all the hard yards, every moment that you’re not lying in bed. I feel like we’ve become so caught up in the idea of getting “toned abs” or a six pack that training your abdominals is very much an “out of sight, out of mind” activity. And I’d like that to change.
Think of it this way: your core is your foundation. Your scaffold.
And if you want to move through the world with more energy, strength and less back pain, this is where it starts - with caring for your core.
I’m not talking about flat tummies or visible abs. That’s mostly a combo of genetics, very low body fat and a lifestyle that rarely involves chocolate. Which is... very much not the vibe here!
I’m talking about training your core so you can:
Run without your back or pelvic floor complaining
Lift heavy things (children, shopping, dumbbells)
Move better in your workouts
Feel stronger in your day-to-day life
Hold better posture even after a long day behind a desk (no more slumping at your laptop!)
Most of the women I work with don’t need more motivation. They need a smarter plan that reflects their midlife physiology and the fact that they are incredibly busy and leading full lives: not the outdated "core = 100 crunches/a juice cleanse/1 hour of cardio a day" narrative (which doesn’t work anyway!).
